Alexandria Aquarium

Next to Qaitbay Citadel on Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour in Al-Anfushi Bay lies Alexandria Aquarium museum. In July 2006, an international meeting of experts discussed the feasibility of constructing an underwater museum in this unique environment and the foundation of the museum began in 1930. The museum contains rare species of fishes, crustaceans and turtles as well as aspects of marine life in Egypt from the Mediterranean and Red Sea. It also exhibits freshwater species of fish from the Nile and the Amazon. The building is a sort of ‘aquarium’ with underwater ‘tubes’ extending down into the glorious pure water of Alexandria to allow visitors to view the work carried out by underwater archaeologists. Enclosed inside the museum is the Marine Research Institute that conducts researches and presentation of underwater cultural heritage, through educational and training activities.
